Abstract

|
In order to study the growth and corm formation response of Gladiolus cormels received hot water, smoking and certain plant growth regulator treatments before cormel sowing were conducted. Furthermore, the effect of cormel planting and corm harvesting times on corm growing were also studied. The sprouting rate for cultivars Red Beauty, Nova Lux and Spic & Span were increased by hot water, ethephon and smoking treatments. For all cultivars treated by smoking, the weight of corm was obviously heavier than the control, and the corm diameter of cultivars Spic & Span, Nova Lux and True Love were increased by the smoking and ethephon treatments. When the planting time was exerted early with relatively big cormel, and the harvesting time of corms was late, the corm formation was markedly promoted and quality of corm was also excellent.
